Beck & Calling

Text of insert note for the original Beck and Calling booklet...

Beck and Calling… the need to escape the everyday...

In September 2009 I was due to go on a photographic workshop - a birthday present from my husband… Mum had died just the week before and the funeral was due to be held at the end of the month. Dad, who had put the first camera in my hand, had died 5 years earlier and I still missed him terribly. I hope it wasn’t just self-interest, but I felt that neither of them would have wanted me to miss out on the opportunity - so I went.

I’m glad I went. To this day I find it difficult to say exactly what it was that I gained from the experience but I do know that it has had a subtle and enduring effect on my pictures. Somehow, it gave me permission to make the pictures I feel I want to… the assurance that my way of seeing the world is valid. Thank you, David and Eddie.

This booklet is the result of the work I did that week and whilst I am not completely happy with the end result - I know a bit more about the art of printing than I did then - I hope you find something to enjoy in it.

Thank you, Mum and Dad.

Booklet text

Beck and calling... the need to escape the every-day.

Why do any of us make images? There is, I think, a basic creative urge within each of us. But beyond that, there is the need to escape the demands of 21st century living, to seek some kind of peace, some kind of communion with the natural environment. It both feeds us, body and soul, but also cares not one iota for us as individuals... perhaps that is why we often seek beauty and solace in such places – a temporary escape from our other lives. Making pictures seems to allow a deeper appreciation of such moments.

These images represent one such escape for me.
